Give Me A Birth Certificate - Honour My Right
0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!
The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) RLC SA Cohort 12 participants kindly ask you to help petition the South African government to honour the rights of the children living at Amazing Grace Children's Home in Lenasia, Johannesburg South. A number of the children at the home do not have birth certificates and this means they are unable to access education, health services and many other basic rights that require one to have national identity papers.
A birth certificate is a vital record that documents the birth of a child. In some cases, the issuance of a birth certificate automatically follows birth registration, although in others a separate application must be made.
Amazing Grace Children's Home is a Non-Profit organisation established in 1989 by Busisiwe Grace Mashaba, "Mam' Grace" as she is affectionately known. The government has refused to register the home because it is located on agricultural land and Mam Grace refuses to throw out children over 18 from the home. The children that come to the home are those abandoned at birth and in most cases brought to the home by local police and hospitals. It is a wonder that the responsible birth registry office still refuses to issue birth certificates for the children at the home when the police and hospitals trust the home to provide shelter for abandoned children.
Please sign this petition and help these kids and many others living in similar homes get their identity.
