As curator of the Armstrong County Historical Museum I want to reach out to the community and ask for help. Our museum located on N. McKean St, Kittanning houses an extensive collection of photos, documents and artifacts from Armstrong County dating back to the 1700s. In the 1980s, Senator Livengood with the help of the Snyder family enacted legislation to allow the museum to purchase it's current building. At that time the front yard, which today is the former playground for the junior high, was one piece of property and their is documentation that the intent of the school district was to transfer the playground back to the museum when it was no longer needed by the school. When our board found out that the KJHS was being torn down we reached out to the School board and were told by the superintendant that their intent was to transfer the property back to the museum so we could make it back into a yard and have our museum functions there. The superintendent asked that we delay a formal request until December 2017, so we waited and wrote them a formal request to acquire the property then. To date we have had no reply to that letter to the board. It has come to our attention that the school district is likely intending to sell the museum front yard to a developer to put multi story dwellings on it. These will block the visibility of our museum from McKean St and prevent us from using the yard for community events. The museum is willing to pay for the property, but we are afraid that we will not be given that opportunity. I AM ASKING THAT ANYONE WHO CAN REACH OUT TO THE SCHOOL BOARD AND CARES ABOUT OUR LOCAL HISTORY PLEASE DO SO AND EXPRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MUSEUM TO OUR COMMUNITY. WE HAVE BEEN WORKING VERY HARD TO UPDATE THE MUSEUM AND MAKE IT A PLACE FOR THE COMMUNITY TO SHARE LOCAL HISTORY. PLEASE ACT NOW. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE. IT APPEARS THAT DECISIONS ARE BEING MADE WITHOUT INPUT FROM OUR COMMUNITY.
