Dear Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk,

                            *UPDATE*
• Formals have allowed dancing of up to 40 people. Thank you for all the signatures in such a short period of time, and happy dancing! •

As you know, 2020 has been a hard year for many people around the world. For the cohort of 2020, we missed out on an incredible senior year that we have been waiting for all our lives. We are incredibly lucky to be getting a formal, but what is a formal without dancing?

We understand the reality of COVID 19 and the importance of social distancing, staying home when sick and many other protective practices that have been implemented to stop the spread of this virus. However, we do not believe that dancing will cause great detriment to anyone if allowed at the formals. To you and many others, it may not seem like a big deal, but this is important to us. It’s the last chance we get to have to be kids. To be with our teachers, our friends, our families. It’s the last checkpoint before entering the real world, where everything is tougher, wilder and much more stricter. In saying this, we are complying with the government regulations. It was recently announced that weddings were allowed to have 40 people maximum dance at a time. We ask that we could have a range of perhaps to 40 to 50 allowed on the dance floor as well. This is because weddings have a similar setting to formals so having a similar safety plan would be reasonable. We understand the seriousness of COVID-19 so having this limit would ensure we can still enjoy ourselves while following a COVID safe plan.

To further continue, New South Wales - which has an alarmingly higher number of infectious people - granted their students the permission to dance and have a formal. From research, it can be seen that no new cases appeared from this action. In fact the rate of COVID cases in NSW have remained stable. This is a clear indication that allowing the Cohort of 2020 to have their last dance would not put Queensland at risk.

If non essential events like the AFL can go on in huge stadiums with thousands of people, a simple dance cannot be held on the same capacity. The formals are closed events so all attendees will have an established relationship with each other. If we can go to school with each other, then we can dance at our events.

We will ensure that all students practice hygiene so that the formal will remain safe for both staff and students.

Please carefully and kindly consider permitting dancing at the Queensland formals this year.

Kind Regards,

Class of 2020, Queensland.
