End State Oriented Campaigns, Abolish the Electoral College

The current method of electing the President of the United States is called the electoral college.  According to the National Archives and Records Administration: 

"The Electoral College is a process, not a place...The Electoral College consists of 538 electors. A majority of 270 electoral votes is required to elect the President. Your state’s entitled allotment of electors equals the number of members in its Congressional delegation: one for each member in the House of Representatives plus two for your Senators(https://www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college/about.html)"

Because of this, the campaign for the presidency has become focused on winning states, not displaying leadership capability to the American public.  It also, by it's nature as a process, has concluded that some votes are worth more than others: "Electoral votes are allocated among the states based on the Census. Every state is allocated a number of votes equal to the number of senators and representatives in its U.S. Congressional delegation—two votes for its senators in the U.S. Senate plus a number of votes equal to the number of its members in the U. S. House of Representatives."  This means that if you live in a state with a greater population, that doesn't typically lean towards one side of the political spectrum, your state will be the focus of the candidates.  This is a problem because it means that not every state wil have equal opportunity to hear the candidates speak in person, ask questions specific to them, etc.  It also, as stated above, becomes a race for states  that can be swayed to one side with the most electoral college votes, not about proving you're a capable leader for the nation.  

The Declaration of Independence states "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."  The electoral college is an inherent infringement upon not only our right to vote for our leaders(with the College, we do not vote for the president, we vote for someone to vote for us) but on one of the founding principles of our nation, that all men are created equal and therefore have equal say in who should be the leader of our nation.

 

I hope to gain the attention of not only my home Representative and Senators Ann Wagner, Josh Hawley, and Roy Blunt (Missouri), but the self proclaimed fighter for "the constitution, individual liberty, and the freedoms that make this country great," Rand Paul, a Senator from Kentucky.  I believe we need to abolish the electoral college, not only because it is an infringement on our right to truly vote for our nation's leader by its very nature, but because it is an inherently flawed system that forces the candidates to focus more on winning states' vote and not proving that they are capable and competent leaders.
