Ann Ravel, Chair of California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC): Conclude investigating the secret $11M funneled into California
Last November, California voters defeated the deceptive Proposition 32, which proponents falsely claimed would ‘stop special interest money’. The hypocrisy behind Prop 32 became clear when proponents accepted an $11 million donation in October 2012 from 'Americans for Responsible Leadership', a Super PAC from Arizona which refused to disclose its donors.
Pressed by Common Cause and other good government groups, the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) sued to compel true disclosure of the donation. On November 5th, the day before the election, the committee that accepted the donation revealed that the $11 million had been funneled through two other out-of-state Super PACs, a violation of California law. However, they still refused to disclose the true source(s) of the money.
The FPPC has maintained an open investigation but has not given a timeline for when their investigation will be complete. We urge them to take action now!
The time has come for the FPPC to accelerate its investigation and force the Super PACs to reveal their donors. Californians deserve to know who attempted to buy an election and why. Please sign this petition to the FPPC and Chair Ann Ravel.
Paid for by No on 32, Stop corporate special exemptions from campaign finance rules, sponsored by working families, John A. Pérez and labor organizations. Major funding by California Teachers Association/Issues PAC committee and California State Council of Service Employees Issues Committee.
- Chair of California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC)
The FPPC did superb work in 2012 towards compelling disclosure of the $11 million sent into California by Americans for Responsible Leadership. Without your hard work, California voters would have had little knowledge about the web of shadowy Super PACs trying to influence our elections.
However, your good work is not done. California voters are still entitled to know the true source(s) of the $11 million, as well as a determination of whether organizations broke California law by funneling or accepting these funds. While the last election has gradually faded from the public eye, it is crucial that this be resolved well in advance of the next election.
I urge you to take the necessary steps to compel a quick and thorough conclusion to this case. Unless this issue is resolved promptly, Super PACs can feel empowered to try to buy our next election without threat of exposure. Your action is necessary to preserve the integrity of our election process.
