Petition Michigan State University to Update its Food Waste Technology

We the students, faculty, and staff of Michigan State University, petition the MSU Department of Sustainability, the Planning and Projects Office, the MSU Surplus/Recycling Center and of course MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon, to invest and update the proper food waste technologies so the anaerobic digester may be utilized to its full potential, which includes collecting all the food from the dining halls and putting it into the anaerobic digester. Part of investing and updating the food waste technology is to also have a composting facility so all the buildings on campus may compost. We acknowledge that the anaerobic digester is a great machine, but has been breaking. MSU is a green university and we proudly wear our green and white! However, we the students, faculty, and staff of MSU believe it is a gross violation of our Core Values to have one of three anaerobic digesters in the country and not use it to its full capacity. All of the food waste from dining halls should be going to the anaerobic digester and there should be methods in place to reduce contamination of the food waste. We feel this is extremely important as according to a 2016 article in the State News, the anaerobic digester collected 800,000 pounds of food annually. This is a lot of food waste adding up in the landfill!

We, the undersigned, are concerned students, faculty, and staff of Michigan State University who urge the above members to invest and update the proper food waste technologies so the anaerobic digester may be utilized to its full potential and so MSU will have a composting facility.
