Pigs Are Pets
Pigs Are Pets
Ever since I was little I had a love of all animals, especially pigs! I remember watching Charlotte's Web thinking and thinking "when I am older I will have my own Wilbert". Three years ago after I began the process of buying my home I started looking into a forever animal. I added a bunch of different type of animal rescues and randomly by chance one day I came across a post about "Dumplin". A year old mini pig who had been staved, beaten, and abandoned. He had high anxiety and was looking for someone to love and care for him and help calm him. At the time I was recovering from a rough time in my life and I also suffered PTSD. From the moment Dumplin and I met we had an instant bond. I held him the entire 2 hour drive home from Hope Indiana and we haven't been able to be separated since. After having dumplin for over two years. He has been taken to the vet. Gone to the dog parks. Updated on all shots. Animal Care and control came to the house to inform me theu will be removing him within 24 hours
Many people have false ideas what a "mini" pig truly is. Most people get mini pigs thinking that they will be cute and tiny forever and that just simply isn't the case. And they do not grow to be massive either.
According to Marion county ordinance Mini Pigs are considered Farm animals. However, there are very clear distinctions between large breeds raised commercially as livestock and the miniature breeds of pets. Mini pigs are not raised, housed, treated, or used for the purposes of livestock and are not a single breed such as potbellied pig, but rather a size classification of smaller sized pigs that are raised as clean and quiet pets. There are several breeds of mini pigs, Potbellies, Juliana and Kune Kune just to name a few. Dumplin is a Juliana and you can tell from his black and grey color and his adorable spotted nose.
Mini pigs average in height from 12 to 18 inches tall at maturity. They are short and heavy. They are very similar in height to English Bulldogs or Cocker Spaniels. Mini pigs average 50-150 lbs in weight when full grown, very similar in weight to medium to large dogs but the pigs are much shorter in height than a dog with similar weight. They can be trained just as dogs and cats to use litter box or go outside. They are easily trained and surprisingly very smart. Dumplin, like most pet pigs knows simple house commands such as "go outside" "lay down" "come". He even will go to his room and shut his own door and cover himself up when told "dumplin go to bed"
Pet mini pigs should have all the same rights and restrictions as cats and dogs and this ordinance is outdated and needs to be looked at to differentiate between classifications of livestock and pets. Mini pigs are loving, protective, sweet animals and are considered pets all over the world.
I have already contacted all major news stations on and all of the city council members on the issue to try to get the ordinance changed, but would like to show that we have the support of others.
Even if I can't use this petition in time to save my family from losing dumplin who is more than a pet but apart of my family I can hopefully use this to stop this from happening to any other family.
