Chloe Webb started this petition to Anglia Ruskin University and

When the first lockdown happened in March 2020, all students were afforded the no detriment policy to ensure no students would be at a disadvantage, that is all we are asking for now.

Throughout this global pandemic university students have been hit incredibly hard and are often an after thought when it comes to supporting young people in the education system. Many think that online learning is the same as face to face learning but it is not. Students come from all different backgrounds and some are less fortunate than others. Not all students have access to wifi, a laptop, a quiet house to work in and time. Most students I know work in supermarkets and other areas that regard them as key workers. More often than not, student key workers are having to work extra hours to help contribute to bills and food due to a parent losing their job, they are also expected to cover shifts because their colleagues have been told to shield. All of these factors go into whether a student can produce the same quality of work as they were before the pandemic and this doesn't even begin to touch on the mental health side of things. Secondary school and college students have had face to face teaching and due to this lockdown they will have to complete just over a months worth of online learning as it stands currently. This small chunk of time that they will be learning online for has led to the cancellation of all exams. University students have been learning online since March 2020 and we are not afforded the support we need. Many third years are trying to write a 10,000 word dissertation with no access to labs, workspaces or a library. We are not asking for exams to be cancelled or dissertations to be cancelled but just a simple safety net to ensure no student will be disadvantaged.

The impacts of this pandemic on the mental health of students are severe. Students have been stuck in tiny rooms for months on end, not being able to see their family. We have been told that face to face learning will happen meaning many students moved back to university but once we were there we were told its actually online and we're not allowed to go back home. This is completely unacceptable and incredibly damaging to a students mental health. Many haven't seen their family over Christmas and those that have, have now been told not to come back to university meaning they have extremely limited resources. This had occurred over many months since March 2020 and nearly a year on we are still experiencing the same issues. This will undoubtedly have a toll on students motivation and mental well-being. Our degrees should not be at risk over something we cannot control.

Ultimately, have done their best for as long as we can but now is the time to support the future of this generation. By the time third years graduate, which includes myself, we would have spent a year and half learning online. That is half of our university experience in total, yet we are expected to perform at the same level as students that never had to learn online. We have been told since the 1st day of our 1st year that online learning does not compete with face to face learning, so why are we expected to submit the same quality of work? We have done our best for as long as we can but we are telling you that we need to support. We are not asking for higher grades or dissertations to be cancelled, but simply for our grades to be averaged and applied to all assignments to ensure we get what we deserve. All we are asking for is that no student is disadvantaged in this difficult time.
