Ruan Viljoen started this petition to Angela Merkel (CDU) (Kanzlerin der Bundesrepublik Deutschland) and

We are writing this petition on behalf of citizens of Southern African countries, to express our immense concern about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on visas for Studies (Bachelors, Masters and PhD), Work (D visa, Blaue Karte), Scientists' stay, Volunteer Service (BFD, FSJ, FÖJ, EFD), Au-Pair, Family Reunion and Binational Couples. There are over 300,000 international students currently enrolled in courses in Germany, many of whom come from “virus-variant countries“, while the number of foreign workers numbers millions. For the upcoming semesters, however, many of these students, from countries that include South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and others in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as Brazil and India, are unable to enter the country due to the ongoing travel ban, despite being accepted by their respective universities. For many, pursuing opportunities abroad is a costly endeavour and one that cannot easily be repeated, and so thousands of doctors, engineers, scientists, novelists, entrepreneurs and world-leaders that would have contributed to the German economy and society as a whole, will be unable to. Many have offers and pending contracts of employment that have been put in place due to the ongoing travel bans.

There is a general understanding that strict restrictions are necessary to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, but I hope you will reconsider banning foreign students and workers altogether and rather engage with us in finding adequate quarantine and restriction measures without a complete ban that is bad for all parties involved.
