On August 3, the District 54 school community of Schaumburg was informed that our schools would begin 'Remote Learning' on August 24, 2020.  This decision was made despite the community vote. As a reminder, 70% of parents chose to have their children in-school while 30% opted for remote learning.

Our community consists of  majority middle class, dual income households. The district's decision has created an undue burden on families in our community, and is in direct contradiction with the wishes of our community.  The elected School Board has failed to represent their constituents with the decision to close the schools for classroom instruction.

In addition, Schaumburg School District 54 provides services for children with special needs. The decision to close the schools, leaves the families with special needs children in a disadvantageous position. Depriving special needs children of these in school services will set them back in their development and educational progress.

The CDC, American Academy of Pediatrics and WHO all recommend in person learning with proper planning to mitigate the risks.

The CDC under the heading "Why it is important to open schools for in-person instruction" sites the following.  "Schools play a critical role in the well-being of communities."  "Teachers are able to more actively participate in student learning, provide feedback as students encounter challenges, and promote active learning among students." "When schools are closed to in-person instruction, disparities in educational outcomes could become wider, as some families may not have capacity to fully participate in distance learning."

Therefore the Schaumburg District 54 parent community insists that their majority stance of restoring in-person instruction for the 2020-2021 school year be granted immediately in order to avoid undue hardship on the students and families of District 54.
