Many school districts need to work on recognizing the holidays of other religions. For many years, Eid was never recognized as a significant Muslim holiday in schools. Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha are two of the most important holidays celebrated by Muslims around the world. It is a 3 day holiday that is celebrated by spending time with loved ones and going out with family and friends.

The Dearborn Public School district and the Detroit Public Schools Community District are two of the few districts in Michigan that give students days of Eid off. Warren Consolidated School District has a large number of Muslim students and Muslim clubs on school campuses such as the Islamic Prayer Club (Warren Mott) and the Muslim Student's Association (Sterling Heights High School). As a Muslim senior at Sterling Heights High School, I believe it would be a great way to show appreciation and recognition for this important holiday by adding it to the district calendar. There are enough Muslim students and staff members in the district including high, middle, and elementary schools for the district to consider giving at least the first day of Eid off.

Muslim students have to be absent to be able to celebrate Eid, which causes them to miss some school work, which is extremely unfair because everyone prefers to spend any holidays with their families rather than at school. Recognizing this holiday would benefit not only Muslims but everyone, as it would provide a wonderful opportunity for people to learn about and appreciate it. I encourage everyone, a Muslim or not, to take a part in this and share it with everyone you know.

Thanks!!
