Erika Wilson started this petition to Representative Andy Harris and

In the 1920’s the inventors of insulin sold the patent for this life saving drug to the University of Toronto for $1.00.

Today, insulin, which many of the 30 million Americans with diabetes rely on, has become the poster child for pharmaceutical price gouging.

The cost of insulin has tripled over the past decade, and the out-of-pocket prescription costs has doubled.  By 2016, the average price per month rose to $450— and costs continue to rise, so much so that as many as one in four people with diabetes are now skimping on or skipping lifesaving doses.

Read that again... one in four people with diabetes are now skimping on or skipping lifesaving doses.

With this petition we are asking our Maryland Legislators to help the victims of this absurd price gauging by joining other states and capping the out of pocket cost of insulin.

Colorado and Illinois both have passed the law that states people with diabetes won’t have to shell out more than $100 per monthly copay for the drug, regardless of how much they use.

My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in October of 2018 at the age of 13.  Although we have health insurance, the expense alone for all the devices needed to manage her diabetes can be overwhelming.

There are so many people that do not have health insurance and our future is not certain either.

Please join our fight, along with the estimated 1 in every 500 people that have Type 1 Diabetes and the approximate 80 new cases that will be diagnosed every year.

Thank you for your time, consideration and thoughtful encouragement of our efforts.
