Hello, my name is Abby. I am a transgender female currently living in Central Kentucky. I currently attend Woodford County Middle School as an eighth grader. Overall, the school is good. Great teachers, open-minded students and high-achieveing scholars. However, there is a "policy" preventing the employees of the school from using the correct name and pronouns for students who do not identify themselves as cisgender. The staff says, "We cannot do this because it could lead to abusive situations at the students home." Frankly, I do not believe that. It would be possible for the teachers to just not use the correct name and pronouns when conversing with the students parents. Hearing my legal name is emotionally painful for me to hear, as it's someone whom I do not know. I know myself as a female and nothing else. The school states that they put the students comfort first, but apparently, this excludes the comfort of their LGBT students. I have had an anonymous friend speak with me about how when they reported hearing transphobic and homophobic slurs, an employee of the school told her to get out of her office. School and adolescence is difficult enough for cisgender students, living as a transgender teenager only makes it harder, and we do not need discrimination and oppression in our place of education making it worse.
