In Kentucky, parents are not eligible to be paid caregivers of their disabled children unless they are under the Michell P. Waiver. The Michelle P. Waiver currently has a waiting list of approximately 8 years. It is especially difficult for parents with disabled pediatrics because children this young do not meet the requirement for the term “disabled” until age 3 or greater. I am the mother of a 13 month old who cannot even hold his head up and is extremely medically complex. Parents in this state must battle for every ounce of help they get for their children and it is sickening. Another waiver needs to be created to allow parents to be PAID caregivers. We are forced into bankruptcy in order to take care of our children. It is time for change. There should be a waiver that includes patients two years old and younger Who are medically complex and require a vast amount of care. Our kids ARE full-time jobs and then some. Our children are PEOPLE who deserve the right to a happy life. It is currently made impossible for disabled pediatrics and their families to receive the appropriate help they deserve.
