I studied languages at another excellent UK language department (Bradford University) and now work as a translator and interpreter. I know how invaluable the free-of-charge assistance of a qualified interpreter is in many everyday contexts for non-native speakers of English in this country.

Really important we continue to do everything to support the study of modern foreign languages in this country. We need to be doing everything to look outwards from this country and promote contact with other nations.

Few things are more scary than thinking that other peoples aren't worth talking to and learning about.

Apart from my daughter being educated here, the treatment of modern languages in UK education is appalling, and I am shocked that an FE college can make such a poor decision when a modern language is an essential part of a graduate's toolkit for a successful career. Think again!
