Jon Phillips started this petition to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

My name is Jon Phillips and I am the fifth generation owner of Phillips Hardware which was established in 1886 in downtown Albany, NY. Over the years, our family has been passionate about employing youth.  We have been an advocate for hiring our future workforce, teaching them integral life and work skills.

Currently, the increased pay wages over the past years have made it challenging to hire and grow youth employees due to their wages being the same as adults.  School-aged employees have work restrictions such as maximum hours and the types of equipment they are able to operate.  As employers we have to make difficult choices all the time, if we have to pay our youth wages that are “living wages”, we will not be able to afford to support and hire the next generation of employees. These individuals are mostly in school and not supporting themselves.

We are compassionate and understand the thought process behind increasing wages. However, the majority of youth do not have the same financial burden as adults. To be clear this in an effort to be able to hire our youth.  A fair balance must be achieved that provides our youth with a path to work experiences and employers with the financial ability to hire our youths at a fair wage, the youth wage.  This is not about saving money but justify teaching the future while allowing them to start contributing to society and establish a work ethic.

Please join many small businesses in New York State in signing this petition in establishing a youth wage.
