WE THE PEOPLE CALL TO VETO 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
To a trusted Citizen:
A short introduction of myself: my name is Shaundraneka Gills, a young Black woman who is tired of the same fight for justice in her country. My entire life, I have known one fact: Black and Brown People are not loved in this country. This comment can be dissected in many ways, taken in however many contexts, but the truth of the statement remains. Another fact I have lived with: the political foundation of America is an ancient and contradicting one. THE TIME FOR CHANGE IS NOW! I write this petition calling for Citizen Action, imploring that if you agree with the two aforementioned facts, you are ready to take back your power as the People, as is our constitutional right stated in the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the People peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
I need not go into details of the current American climate: amid a global pandemic, countless Black lives are senselessly taken while countless “other” lives open-carry in the streets for the sake of the economy, an economy that has failed to realize its potential to cater to its People, an economy that values the power of a dollar over the blood in life. I want to be clear in intentions: this is not a call for race-ending violence or war. This is a call to demand that our country listens to the grievances and cries of the People.
It is time we demand, nay, force, America to stare deep into its roots; for generations of “patriots” to truly understand the nation they call “Home of the Free”. Even as I reference the American Constitution, which so clearly since its inception opens with the lines “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote for the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” I do so knowing and understanding wholeheartedly that I and my ancestors, my family, my Hispanic, African, Native, and Indigenous friends were merely an afterthought in the forming of those words.
I can name all the deaths or list all the dates of genocide, but this is not a history lesson. The facts still remain. America has lost all validity in the phrases “We the People”, “Justice”, and “Union”. I refuse to watch another lifetime pass by without true Reparations. This does not simply come in monetary value, despite what our government has led us to believe. NO. For this, money will not solve our problems. It will not silence us. And it will not buy our lives anymore.
We’ve already seen, through this pandemic and all the necessary chaos that follows, how our government responds to our life crisis, from our health to our personal safety. We see what happens when the People refuse to spend their money. We have learned who the true heroes are in this country and how they keep this economy afloat. And still, We the People are seen as ungrateful and selfish for demanding our true rights, “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”.
I ask, trusted citizens, that by signing this petition, you agree to withhold your vote in the 2020 Presidential election, as a reclamation of Veto power by the People, in an act of solidarity to show Congress that We the People, refuse to participate in a racist, failing, and hypocritical political system any longer. WE DEMAND CHANGE NOW! We demand that government funding is re-evaluated. We demand that the voting processes be re-evaluated. We demand that public servants who have grown to become militarized be re-evaluated. And after they are re-evaluated, they MUST be changed. Congress must work with the People, not politicians, to ensure that We are taking the RIGHT steps towards ensuring We live in a true Land of the Free.

“WHEN in the Course of Human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the cause which impel them to the Separation.
WE hold these Truths to be self-evident, that ALL Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness -- That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient Causes; and accordingly all Experience hath shewn, that Mankind are more disposed to suffer, while Evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the Forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future Security. Such has been the patient Sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the Necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government.”
