Majority of Americans are consuming the proper amount of fruits and vegetables needed to maintain a healthy diet, while a portion of Americans are struggling to afford these items. The portion of Americans who don't have access to affordable food choices come from disadvantaged neighborhoods who are majority black and brown. These communities go through something called a ‘Food Desert’, where it is very difficult to afford healthy foods that are up to quality. Instead, they are consuming vast amounts of unhealthy foods, typically fast-foods. Because of this inadequate access, poorer neighborhoods are seen have developed obesity and obesity-related diseases. In New York State alone, the percentage of adults who are overweight or obese increased from 42% in 1997 to 62.7% in 2018.  Obesity among children and adolescents has tripled over the past three decades. In communities like the Bronx, where majority of the people are lower income and already have worry about how expensive it is to pay their housing, they shouldn't also have to worry about whether them or their children are physically healthy and if they will have enough money to afford a healthy meal.
