Due to Covid-19, many colleges all across the country have seen a shift in the format of classical education to the remote model. While the concept and implementation of online classes has been around for nearly 2 decades, there has been a clear and identifiable rough transition from what we have called a "normal distribution of education."

Students all across the country have remained at home in order to keep the steady pace of obtaining their degrees in the same time-frame that was outlined for them. While it is widely understood by many that the actual opening of the dormitories on college campuses, is too great of a risk to a mass student body, has the question ever been raised of what "higher education" looks like at home?

Paying the exact same tuition as we would if we were attending in-person instruction, yet receiving an 1/8th of the benefits. Professors have demonstrated a lack of empathy to the current situation and do not compensate for the critical components to learning, such as a focused classroom, office hours, responsive email turn around, etc. Yet the expectation remains the same, that students will retain the information at the same rate that they would in a standard classroom.

The I Am Only One Person campaign has been started in order to garner attention towards these matters.

I Am Only One Person, stands up for the students who work full time jobs to put themselves through school. The ones who go to class on their phone, in their cars, in the parking lot of their jobs, so they can clock in on time. The ones who go to school with houses full of distractions and poor environments. The ones who have other obligations, being a wife/husband, mother or father. A sister or brother. We stand up for those who don’t have the proper necessities to functionally learn. For the students who are losing sleep to complete assignments, or for the ones who can’t find the will to learn when everything is going against them. We stand up for the students, who fight constantly with themselves if all this emotional stress is really worth the college degree. We stand up for the students, who are students no longer.

We implore the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, the SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras, and every single professor across the country who is teaching remotely. Please remember just because we (the students) have been sent home, does not mean we can still remain only students. We beseech those who have the power to change, to change the grading for the 2020-2021 school year to pass/fail, and if this can not be accomplished then at least give us (the students) your true understanding.

I Am Only One Person.

I know that my grades for this year do not reflect my true identity as a student, and yet that is all anyone else will assume to see. They will not see me going to school in my car, crying over homework, or screaming because my professor won’t post their gradebooks. They will see a grade and not seek to understand why I got that grade, because at the end of the day that grade will define me.

I Am Only One Person

I am striving to be the best person I can be in everything that I am responsible for, my education, my family, my job, my bills and my mental/emotional/physical health. But, I Am Only One Person. It hurts me when I fail at something that I know I am trying so hard to succeed to the highest degree in. It breaks me when I know I have lost control of the one thing that I have decided to do in this life, be a student.

I Am Only One Person, and for the entire student body of the class of remote learning in 2020-2021… I know you are Only One Person too.
