End Eviction Moratorium in New York State

End Eviction Moratorium in New York State

To insure that the moratorium for evictions in New York State does not get extended beyond August 31, 2021, please sign this petition.
While the original moratorium on evictions had purpose and merit in helping individuals and families finding themselves in desperate circumstances, this is no longer the case. Stores and businesses have opened, employers are in dire need to fill thousands of jobs, and help wanted signs are everywhere. In other words, there is money to be earned, and life is returning to a new normal.
In the meantime, landlords, like the rest of the world, have also suffered great personal and financial loss due to the pandemic. To ask landlords (most of whom are "mom & pop" entities) to continue to carry the expense of providing free housing for others, while continuing to add to their own personal and financial hardship, is unfathomable. Many landlords have suffered job loss and health issues due to the pandemic, and have been forced to empty their savings and even sell their homes. Why should they still be required to pay for someone else's housing in addition to their own struggles?
Landlords have had no say in these decisions, and most have been understanding and gracious, bearing this hardship since December 2020. In May, the US Supreme Court agreed with ending the national ban on evictions and ruled that the national moratorium should expire as scheduled. The court even challenged the lawfulness of such a moratorium. We are asking New York State to do the same, to allow the eviction moratorium to expire on August 31, 2021, and put an end to the unfair, and unsustainable hardship placed on New York State landlords.
