Licensed Mental Health Counselors are at the forefront of the national effort to address addiction, provide mental health counseling to vulnerable populations such as veterans challenged by PTSD or seniors faced with depression, and deliver trauma informed therapy to adolescents impacted be abuse and neglect.

While highly qualified and authorized to provide individual and group counseling, addiction treatment and psychotherapy, LMHCs are not authorized under the law to issue a diagnosis. There are a limited number of professionals authorized to diagnose and this shortage is putting a strain on New York State’s ability to provide mental health care.

LMHCs are willing to increase our requirements for licensure to become a recognized diagnosing professional. Bill S6582A, sponsored by Pamela Helming, creates new requirements for licensure to ensure competency in diagnosing and pathways for currently licensed LMHCs to become authorized to diagnose.

LMHCs are ready. We want to be a part of the solution that addresses the mental health needs of New Yorkers. Please support the bill that creates additional qualified diagnosing professionals in LMHCs.
