I write this on behalf of Richard Lee Chalk to endorse his petition for clemency and to show my unequivocal support for his release back into society. On March 9, 1988 Lee was involved in a crime that resulted in the tragic loss of two human lives. Lee was convicted of numerous charges including felony murder, an arcane legal doctrine that allows someone to be convicted of murder even if they had no direct involvement in the killings. He was sentenced to 70 years-to-life. Today, Lee is a changed man who has spent 32 years in prison repenting for his crimes. Lee has made exceptional strides in self-development and improvement, and a commutation of his sentence is most certainly in the interests of justice and consistent with public safety. If the purpose of incarceration is about rehabilitation and remorse, if the purpose of taking away someone’s liberty for multiple decades is about addressing their treatment needs and serving the interests of justice, then I can say without hesitation that Lee has met–and far surpassed–that goal.

In Lee's own words: "How long must we sing the songs of freedom to set the stories right? The untold stories of missed opportunities for those who have once traveled down a dark path. Redemption, rehabilitation, and healing can only be achieved through forgiveness from our higher selves for  things we have done in ignorance. As a society, we the people must come to terms with the harsh criminal sentences dispensed unto our youth, because it reflects an negative vision of our collective selves when we deprive justice and deny freedom for those who cry out for mercy." --Richard "Lee" Chalk.
