Quinn S started this petition to Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and

As student athletes in New York State, we want to formally ask the NYS department of health and more importantly Governor Cuomo to give us the go ahead to play our season we’ve worked so hard for. Student athletes shouldn’t be the victims of political bias in our state. With declining COVID-19 numbers (infection rate 0.9% statewide/0.7% in NYC according to Governor Cuomo) now is the time to play. It’s hard to understand that it it’s “unsafe” for football games but it’s “safe” for other sports like soccer, field hockey, and cross country. In addition to this, the “guidance” given to us has been unclear since the beginning of this pandemic. Yesterday we waited all day on increased “guidance” from NYS which was that there was no update on the status of our season. Social distancing guidelines seen in Ohio, Utah, Indiana, Tennessee, etc that could be used here in NY have proven to have been effective. Football is being played in several states right now including states that have much higher infection rates than ours.

The mental health of football players is at stake now. We need this season now more than ever. Football provides a family like no other and a bond with teammates and coaches that can’t be replaced. Football doesn’t need the athletes, the athletes need football. We want to play. #LetUsPlay
