I am Dr Viola Nicholas-Okpara, a Research Scientist from Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi Lagos Nigeria.
I am an advocate of Food and Nutrition security and Change in Nigeria.
When you look around you, you see people suffer because of lack of knowledge.
We are what we eat, when we eat chemical foods we are predisposed to different non communicable diseases (NCDs) which the prevalence rates are high. Such diseases are cancer, kidney, liver and heart diseases.
Nigerian farmers are using chemical fertilizer for cultivation which makes our soil sick and our foods become chemical foods.
My vision is to create Organic healthy Nigeria using Organic science. And my mission is to reduce the rate of Non communicable diseases (NCDs) in Nigeria by two-third through actualization of Organic soil, Organic food, Organic water and ensuring food security along food web in Nigeria.
For instance, Cancer is number two under Non-communicable disease.
According to World Health Organization, Cancer is a disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body or a malignant growth or tumour resulting from an uncontrolled division of cells. It is one of the major causes of death globally, with 7.6 million deaths in 2008, mostly from developing countries. Most cancers are linked to environmental and lifestyle changes; ironically, they are mostly preventable. In native Africans, 650,000 people of a projected 965 million are diagnosed to have cancer yearly, with the lifetime risk of females being twice that of their peers in the developed world.
Types of cancer
Commonly occurring cancers in Nigeria include cervical, breast, prostrate, skin, and gastric cancers.
Causes of cancer
Substances that cause DNA mutations are known as mutagens, and mutagens that cause cancers are known as carcinogens. Particular substances have been linked to specific types of cancer. Tobacco smoking is associated with many forms of cancer, and causes 90% of lung cancer.
It is projected that by 2020, cancer incidence in Nigerian males will rise to 90.7/100,000 and for females to100.9/100, 000.
We have solution to this. It is well said that prevention is better than cure.
Food security is the state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of safe, affordable, and nutritious food.
How many of us have access to safe drinking water and Food in Nigeria?
Do you know we have hidden cancers in drinking water and food we consume everyday in Nigeria?
I promote Organic world, Organic soil, Organic food and Organic water in Nigeria
There is need for Nigerian farmers to switch completely to Organic farming today and however think on how we can feed the entire Nigeria with Organic foods. Together we change our world through awareness and EXTENSIVE training; equipping and empowering Nigerian farmers/intending farmers, Agriculturists, with commercial organic farming skills and knowledge.
With this my conscious effort to my community, we can achieve a healthy and wealthy Organic world.
