Replace George Clinton's statue with a statue of the Honorable Shirley Chisholm

0 have signed. Let’s get to 100!

The National Statuary Hall Collection in the United States Capitol Building is comprised of statues donated by individual states to honor persons notable in their history. The entire collection now consists of 100 statues contributed by 50 states.

Thirty-five statues are currently located in National Statuary Hall, six in the Rotunda, 13 in the Crypt, 13 in the Hall of Columns and 24 in the Capitol Visitor Center. The remaining statues are located in various areas throughout the House and Senate wings of the Capitol.

Out of those 100 statues only 4 of those statues are of African Americans. Why do I think this is a problem? Well for a fact we know that enslaved African Americans built this nation. Take a tour of the Capitol Building and visit the Crypt and they will tell you the pillars that hold up the Rotunda was hand made by slave.

In a time like this with racial tensions high because of the rhetoric coming out of a specific branch of government, we need to show inclusiveness by replacing some of the statues in the Capitol Building with prominent figures of different ethnic background.

In accordance with the Procedure and Guidelines for Replacement of Statues
in the National Statuary Hall Collection this petition is to call on the New York State Legislature to enact a resolution to replace the statue of George Clinton with a statue of the Honorable Shirley Chisholm.

The Honorable Shirley Chisholm was a trailblazer in the political field. She was the first African American woman to be elected to Congress and the first African American woman to run for the Presidential nomination of a major party. The Honorable Shirley Chisholm left a permanent mark in Congress by becoming one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The Honorable Shirley Chisholm embodies the traits and ideal of what it means to be a New Yorker and deserves to be immortalized in the halls of Congress. No state has placed a statue in Congress of an African American so let us do what New Yorker do best and that's lead the way to change.
