Veronica Peck started this petition to Andrew Cuomo and

My dream for years has been to study abroad in Japan. This year, that dream finally came true. I am a student studying abroad in Japan. I was just directed by the State University of New York/Andrew Cuomo to come home immediately. There are several reasons why that’s bad for me, and for New York as a whole.

1) If I do return, I cannot take classes at my home university this semester; they are too far into the semester for me to do so

2) My host university is currently on break (which has nothing to do with Corona); we don’t resume classes until April.

3) My return, and the return of others will put US and the community in danger. A mass movement of people is not the best solution. My prefecture of Japan has zero cases of corona. My home state, on the other hand, has several.

4) With the information I have now, it will become very easy to fall a semester behind.

5) I, and other students abroad, have contracts in our host countries, whether with dorms, apartments, cell phone companies, and others, that we cannot break.

6) On the emotional side, it has been a dream of mine and others to study abroad. We’ve all worked ourselves very hard to get here, and to have it just snatched away with no input or information is not ethical.

This is just my story, but I’m sure other students abroad-in Japan, South Korea, Italy, Iran- have similar stories. We should absolutely have the option to return to the United States, but we should not be forced to return. We have lives in our host countries, and it is unethical to suddenly remove us from those lives with little information or notice, is not okay. It is illogical, financially, academically, and with consideration to public health, to force us to come home.
My proposals

1) Reinstate study abroad programs, so as not to interrupt the students and faculty affected.

2) Offer resources to students and faculty abroad to return if they feel that is right

3) Give the students and faculty affected more information

If this works, I, and the hundreds of others affected, will be safer from the virus, academically and financially on track, and be able to follow our dreams.
