Gov. Cuomo: conduct independent, scientific studies of health and safety of ALL pipelines

You are to be commended for directing your “administration to commence an immediate independent safety analysis” of the Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM) natural gas pipeline project and for your call to the Federal Energy Regulating Commission (FERC) to reconsider and stay its decision regarding the AIM project pending such analysis. As you stated, “The safety of New Yorkers is the first responsibility of state government when making any decision”. That call for caution echoes your courageous stance on unconventional oil and gas extraction.
However, the infrastructure that transports gas and oil across our State, including compressor stations, emits methane and volatile organic compounds that present similar risks to the health and safety of our citizens, our climate and our environment. A rapidly expanding body of scientific research points to long-term serious health consequences so substantial that they can no
longer be ignored in the review process.
Though not all pipelines proposed for New York State are located in close proximity to a nuclear power plant, all pose significant risks to public health and safety and to the environment. As you have done with the AIM project, please direct your administration to conduct independent, scientific studies of the health and safety effects of all pipeline projects under review, particularly the average and peak emissions at compressor stations.
Call on FERC to undertake the same as part of their review process.
Thank you for your leadership and commitment to our environment.
