Councils are making a small fortune out of motorists with outrageously high parking fines for no good reason other than that they can. The proliferation of rangers not only in the CBD but in local councils all around Sydney has been staggering. This form of indirect taxing has got to stop and councils need to manage their budgets without slugging motorists as an easy target.

The rationale that parking fines are necessary is not in question - the amount they charge and the proliferation of "No Stopping" signs and rigorous, inflexible enforcement is very much in question. On many occasions stopping for 30 seconds in a "No Stopping" zone is unavoidable as there is nowhere else to stop, and causes no harm where there is no traffic in either direction. It is certainly not worth $263!

Over-development without due consideration to sufficient parking spaces is part of the problem, and developers are making a killing without creating enough underground car parking spaces for the number of dwellings they build. Likewise shopping centres in busy areas need to ensure enough free car parking spaces are available.

Wages have been stagnant for a long time, and with property prices and rents out of control, cost of living pressures have never been higher. Most of us can't afford another expense, particularly those providing a public service such as ride-sharing drivers who are most vulnerable to this. One $263 fine is more than an entire day's work for most people!

At the very least, most "No Stopping" signs should be "No Parking" and the fines should be drastically reduced. Councils that target motorists as an easy fix for their budgetary issues need to be told to stop!
