It is essential for thousands of care workers across the UK to be able to travel to their clients homes. We estimate the average domiciliary care worker in the UK travels around 250 miles per week on their rounds (with many reporting more than double this figure). Depending on which figures and vehicle are used for the calculation, that could potentially equal to 55 kg of CO2 each week, per carer.

The UK government now plan to scrap subsidies for electric vehicles. The ban on petrol cars to make all vehicles emissions free by 2040 is being tipped to be brought forward, with many calling for it to be accelerated by a decade to 2030.

Given that the median rate of pay for a domiciliary care worker in 2019 was just £8.10 per hour, and unlikely to see big increases, and with the lower budget electric cars available in the UK selling for over £17,000 (with the grant that is being axed), complying with this ban on petrol and diesel cars will be a financial impossibility for many Carers.

According to the UK Government website, Co2 accounts for 81% of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK, with transport being responsible for 33% of those emissions (2018). Considering the impact that domiciliary care work must be currently having on CO2 emissions, the number of journeys travelled, how critical these journeys are and how underpaid the care workforce is; care workers are a key demographic to assist in the uptake of electric cars.

There are no serious assessments available on the impact the petrol ban could have to the future of domiciliary care if brought forward. Combined with the lack of solid planning to roll out electric car infrastructure and the end of the government subsidies, there could be wide ranging implications for many if no planning and budgets are put in place soon.

This petition therefore aims to bring the Government's attention to this issue and calls for electric car subsidies to be continued and expanded for care workers and the practicalities of an average UK based care worker investing in electric vehicles to begin being publicly acknowledged.
