Why Highschoolers NEED State Mandated Mental Health Days:

Currently, teenage mental health is at an all-time low due to constant exposure to media. It is not our generation’s fault, as we were born with it and had to adapt to the times. We have perpetual social deprivation from a year of quarantining. Instead of having substantial amounts of set school days federally required for a school year, it is more productive to have fewer days with more mental breaks.

As illustrated by The University of California, downtime is crucial for our brains to develop personality traits, make personal connections, and form our identities. Our prefrontal cortex fully developed for 8 hours of constant focus. For every hour of rigid concentration on a single subject, our brains require 10 minutes of mental rest. With our 7 hour school days plus the 3 hours of homework we do each day, we need approximately 100 minutes of mental rest per day. This adds up to 300 hours per year (45 school days)

A solution could be 2-3 days a month set aside for mental health. Using these mental health days, we as students can use our class time to its fullness. As students, we can be more engaged in what our dedicated teachers are teaching us about. If we have a few days a month to have a mental break. We are experiencing a global pandemic, and it has taken a big toll on everyone. We as students are facing an overall sense of a lack of motivation. Everything is uncertain. With these very few days each month, we as students can find things that help us to be more motivated for our futures and lives beyond a virus.
