Tonya Winbush started this petition to Anderson County Council

The historic connotation of the word "plantation" is synonymous with chattel slavery. Plantation is a word that reminds us of a tragic part of Black American history. Therefore, it seems unconscionable that the students of Nevitt Forest Elementary School, which has a majority of black students, would be subjected to use Plantation Road to travel to school every day. This is why the road's name should be changed to Gracie Floyd Road. Ms. Gracie Floyd died earlier this year due to complications from COVID-19. She was the Anderson County Councilwoman for District 2, and  Nevitt Forest Elementary is in that district. This change will honor and recognize a great leader in the community and will also remove negative images of a past with which we have yet to come to terms from the minds of impressionable elementary school students.
