Nnanna Omeirondi started this petition to Anahiem Union School District

The recent racial injustices we have seen on different platforms of media highlight the importance of being informed and aware of the history leading up to this point in time. Students of the Anaheim Union School District have strongly voiced that there needs to be a major increase in the education of Black history in history classes.  It is vital for us to correctly educate our youth on such a huge part of our country’s undeniable history. The Anaheim Union School District’s failure to teach students the history of their country violates its goals and philosophy as a district, which includes the promise to provide its students the opportunity to “understand and respect the history and cultures of the world”. AUHSD does not teach parts of Black history and it does not go unnoticed by our students, families, or community members. Our students are voicing not only a want but a need for a more in-depth study of Black history.

The lack of education of Black history in addition to the glorification of white history has contributed to the educational systemic racism seen today. Our district’s history books fail to include influential figures in Black history, such as Angela Davis, Marcus Garvey, and Malcolm X. Our district’s history books fail to include historical events such as Juneteenth. Our district’s history books fail to include the stories of cities such as Harlem and Tulsa. History books today have allowed students to be ignorant of Black history because they have it was never properly nor fully taught. How are students supposed to respect what they do not know?

One step to ending this ignorance is by adding more Black history in the history curriculum. Please help voice this to our administration by signing! Although we understand changes cannot be made instantly, we want the future of our education to be filled with the true history of this country and the people who built it. Black lives matter and it is pertinent that we teach our students why.
