Support the extension of Unpaid Parental Leave

Last June, the Bill to extend Parental Leave passed through the Dáil largely unopposed and with cross-party support. The Bill proposed that Parental Leave would be extended from 18 to 26 weeks and that parents would be able to avail of the leave until a child is 12 years old rather than 8 years,as it currently stands.

As the Bill was entering into the final stages in the Seanad, the Government / Fine Gael withdrew their support for the Bill. It seems that they are more concerned about the impact that 8 extra weeks leave across 4 years might have on businesses and employers than they are about the potential value to children and families.

Parental leave is a lifeline to families with working parents. It allows them to spend time with their children and cut down on the cost of childcare, whilst permitting them to remain in employment without incurring any financial burden on employers or the tax payer.

Please sign and share this petition to let An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, know that you want the government to support the Bill to extend Parental Leave.

Additionally, please write to your local representatives to let them know that the Bill is important to you and ask them to ensure that their party or grouping in the Seanad and Dáil vote in support of the Bill.
