Re: The Urgent Need for Improved Officiating Standards in the WNBA
Dear Commissioner Engelbert,
We, the undersigned fans and supporters of the WNBA, write to you with both admiration for the league’s continued growth and grave concern over a rising issue that threatens the fairness and integrity of the game: the current state of officiating.
While we celebrate the incredible talent and competitive fire of this 2025 WNBA season, recent games—particularly those involving the Connecticut Sun against the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky, Dallas Wings against Los Angeles Sparks—have brought a troubling level of inconsistent officiating and overlooked physicality to national attention. Missed calls, dangerous physical contact, and a lack of accountability from officials have become all too common.
In these games, players endured repeated hard fouls, borderline flagrant, and near ejection plays that were either ignored or mishandled by referees. What should have been showcase matchups were marred by confusion, tension, and moments that clearly compromised player safety. The physicality witnessed went beyond “letting them play”—it bordered on negligence.
This isn’t about favoritism—it’s about protecting the integrity of the game. A standout example of how things should look was the recent Commissioner's Cup game involving Indiana Fever vs. New York Liberty matchup this season. That game showcased elite talent, mutual respect, and clean, competitive play. It was everything fans want from the WNBA: skill, sportsmanship, high quality officiating and a fair fight from start to finish.
As fans who deeply care about this league, we are calling on the league office to take meaningful and transparent action. Specifically, we urge:
- Enhanced Referee Training & Evaluation
• Provide ongoing development and training to ensure referees are properly equipped to manage high-stakes physical matchups.
• Implement stronger performance reviews with accountability for clear, repeated officiating failures. - Clearer Enforcement of Rules Regarding Excessive Physicality
• Protect all players equally from unnecessary contact. No player—rookie or veteran—should have to endure reckless fouls without consequence. - Replay Review Expansion & Transparency
• Expand in-game review protocols to address missed calls and dangerous play.
• Make postgame officiating evaluations publicly available when significant errors occur. - Consistent Standards Across All Matchups
• Ensure that every team, regardless of market size or media attention, receives the same standard of officiating and player protection.
The WNBA is entering a golden era. Viewership is up, media coverage is rising, and the fanbase is growing rapidly. With this progress comes a responsibility to ensure that the league reflects the professionalism, safety, and sportsmanship it promises. The current officiating standard, as evidenced in the recent Sun-Fever and Sun-Sky games, simply does not meet that mark.
Commissioner Engelbert, we appreciate your leadership in driving the WNBA forward. We now ask that you take this opportunity to strengthen the league further by addressing what has become a serious and visible concern.
We love this game. We respect its athletes. And we expect better.
Sincerely,
WNBA Fans and Supporters from Across all Nations
