The Lord Mayors pub opened as a watering hole in 1668 and while the iconic building on the corner of Forest Road & Dublin Road may not date from the same period, it remains one of the oldest and most recognisable buildings in Swords. As one of the few remaining thatched buildings in Ireland, it has been heralded and showcased as a symbol of Swords on countless news articles, reports and tourist promos.

The former business owners now want to demolish the historic pub and squeeze 172 apartments into the land it sits on. We, the local residents are attempting to limit this. Housing is as critical an issue in Swords as it is everywhere in Dublin and we do not oppose construction on this site, of appropriate housing which does not affect the landmark building. However, we feel this particular proposal is too big and too modern for our beautiful medieval town.

We feel the proposal for a brutal, modern-style 7 storey apartment block on a traditional street like Church road is an absurd and disingenuous bid to lower expectations for future planning applications. This design is a greedy attempt to maximise the profits of investors at the expense of the town ambience and quality of life of locals. It disregards the beautiful stonework aesthetic of the surrounding area and uses every inch of available space to push stark towers as far as possible outwards into our town.

The new development entrance will be on Church road, just 100m from the most traffic-laden junction in the town. The addition of a car park and spaces for 172 apartments will cause unimaginable toll on this already chaotic junction.

We kindly ask the developers to go back to the drawing board and design a solution which enhances the beauty of the surrounding area rather than disrupting it, and one works within the infrastructure available to the site on which they intend to build.
