Simon Arruda started this petition to Pope Francis

There is more awful news coming out concerning Canada’s residential schools. Recently, 751 unmarked graves were found at a Catholic-run school in Saskatchewan. Once again, Canadian Catholics are left reeling over this devasting find. Though it is yet unclear how many of these graves belong to children, it still darkens the picture of the Church’s role in this genocide.

As Catholics, we can try to comfort ourselves by saying it was the government’s goal to assimilate indigenous children. We could also say that Catholics were not the only Christian denomination running these schools. But I feel to do so is an attempt to skirt our Church’s role in the whole affair. We cannot and must not lower the bar for ourselves by pointing to others. Lowering the bar for ourselves is cowardice and, in my opinion, a grave injustice to the innocent souls who are otherwise voiceless.

I applaud Cardinal Collins and other Catholic officials who have apologized and made reconciliatory remarks on these finds. I am also grateful that the parties involved are cooperating, having publicly apologized. The Our Lady of Guadalupe Circle is one venture that came about out of the need to reconcile and make a way forward.

I join the call for accountability and reconciliation, firstly, because as a follower of Christ, I know that’s what He demands of us. Secondly, because regardless of religious persuasion, it is the decent thing to do in memory of the trauma and suffering at the hands of those who were to be exemplary models of the hands and feet of Christ! It is a deep stain and a grievous injury. Let us continue to forge a path forward and join the call to have the head of our Church, Pope Francis, apologize on behalf of us all.
