Orinda has a new Sports Field Park at Wilder, but, for some reason, there is not one park in the city where dogs can play "off leash".  Since the city has a lack of sidewalks and few walking paths, it is often not safe for dogs and dog owners to walk and socialize with other dogs.  Cars careen through our very narrow streets, causing pedestrians and dogs on leash to jump out of the way just to avoid accidents. Our streets area also fairly steep, disallowing physically challenged citizens from providing play outlets for their dogs.  Additionally, off leash dogs are not allowed at school fenced-in areas so safe group dog play areas simply do not exist.  Some dogs walkers (owners) are not courteous and allow their dogs to walk on private property.  Additionally, some dog walkers (owners) do not "clean up" after their dogs, leaving dog dirt on the street where cars and other walkers hit it - not a pleasant experience. A fenced in dog park at Wilder would eliminate many of these issues.  The park would follow the model of Paso Nogel and Heather Farms.  There is already ample parking at the park. The dog area would consist of two chain link fenced in areas, one for small dogs, the other for large dogs, with owner benches and shade areas. Inside, each area would include a paved loop for walking with a large center area covered in wood chips or grass. Dog dirt receptacles would be included. A dog water fountain would allow for dogs to drink.  A dog agility course could be added to provide a challenge for smarter dogs.  The dog entry area would be "double gated" to allow for safety when off/on leashing dogs.   I encourage my fellow dog owners and all interested citizens of Orinda to support this petition.
