As many people know, and some may not know, there is a Bachelor of Nursing Program through the University of South Dakota (USD) located in Pierre. For me, and many others, this has been an amazing opportunity that I would not have taken had it not been available at this location. I know this is the case with most, if not all the students at the Pierre location. Students from smaller communities such as Eagle Butte, Burke, Mission, Gettysburg,  and Wessington have relied on this program in the Pierre location.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but there is a chance that the Nursing Program will no longer be available in the Pierre location.  This will affect many people who have planned on going to USD.  It takes most people at least 4 years to get your bachelors degree.  Can you imagine moving your family to the closest USD location to start your nursing education just to be told 8 months before you start, that the program is no longer available to you?  I am lucky enough to be "one of the last" USD BSN-Pierre students to be graduating the year of 2021.  A year ago, if I was told what I had been planning for 4 years would not actually be happening, I would be devested. Not only have people been planning to come to the Pierre location, but people have been working hard and paying for it as well.

Speaking of hard work, I want to mention the instructors here at the University Center in Pierre.  I have never met more hard working people.  Each of them challenge us to be the best we can be as student nurses.  I hope to be half as hard working as they are and strive to do so in my clinical setting.  They are committed to our success and will do anything to make sure we end up on top.  Let's say there is no program.  What happens to our instructors?  Will they have to leave what they have dedicated their lives to for the past 10 plus years? If not for the students, it should be for them.  Keep the Pierre location open.

We are in a shortage for nurses. Everyone knows this.  During times like these we should not be getting rid of educational opportunities, we need to be making more.  There is no BSN program located in central South Dakota.  Going to school in this region only makes it more obvious as to why we need to keep the Pierre site open.  It is a rural area which makes it hard not only to get people here, but for them to stay.  With a Pierre location we are able to participate in clinicals at places such as the Mary House (the long term care facility), the Women's Prison and the Hospital. We become close to the people who work at these facilities, which in turn makes us want to stay here as well. I am not saying everyone stays, but it is a step in the right direction to help the shortage of nurses in central South Dakota.

I am passionate about this because I am passionate about others.  That is was being a nurse is.  It might be too late to make a difference, but I hope this petition is signed to show how many people appreciate that the Pierre location is available.
