Demand Federal Mandatory Minimum Sentences for Sexual Assault Convictions
This petition had 52 supporters
Rape is a tragedy that everyone knows happens, but few are willing to discuss. Mandatory minimum sentences for sexual assault are one solution to the problem that many women face; the fear of not being heard- of justice not being taken. This fear was reignited when a Stanford University swimmer served only three months in jail after raping an unconscious woman. We need to stand together to ensure that justice is enacted for the victims of rape. Social benefits like lessening of such fear and a new societal view of rape that places blame on the attacker, not the victim, make this solution an important option. Economically, rape is the costliest crime, and the government pays about $127 billion each year because of it! California has taken steps in the right direction by passing a bill that makes "prison time mandatory for anyone convicted of sexually assaulting a person who is unconscious or too intoxicated to consent." Now it is time for our nation to follow suit and protect the victims of rape. Sign this petition to demand that lawmakers pass bills requiring federal mandatory minimum sentences for sexual assault convictions!
