More than ever the housing crisis in Auckland, and the homelessness and inequality that has been caused as a consequence, needs to be at the forefront of Auckland - and the nation’s - focus. Before the issue exacerbates further, action must be taken to adjust relevant policies and raise awareness in an effort to place pressure on the Government and Auckland council for further action.
A cross party homelessness inquiry from left-wing parties in October of 2016 (Maori Party, 2016) presented multiple recommendations for how the Government should act to combat homelessness, in a report aptly titled ‘Ending Homelessness in New Zealand’. In line with these discussed actions, we should all seek policy change emphasising the need to create a national strategy on homelessness.
New Zealanders need to vocalise what the New Zealand Government should be doing as effective actions forward to alleviate the massive social concern of homelessness - calling on political developments to be made through the creation of a national strategy on homelessness.
