Greetings Amityville Community,

COACH BYER's COURT

We have a longstanding pillar of our community, that we need to truly recognize. His name is Claude Byer. Mr. Byer is a retired Math Teacher and Girl's Basketball Coach. Many of his former students, players, and community members feel it is important to honor him. Our goal, is to get as many signatures as possible, so we as a community can dedicate the new Amityville Memorial High School basketball court, to such an amazing man.  WE NEED YOUR HELP!

See below Claude Byer's Bio

Claude Byer was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1944.  He was the second-youngest of five children born to Charles and Estelle Byer.  Claude attended elementary and junior high school in Brooklyn, NY, and high school in Farmingdale, NY.  He graduated from Farmingdale High School in 1962.

Claude attended Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Chemistry and his Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.  During his four years in the military, Claude earned the rank of Captain and received his Master's Degree in Education. While serving his major tour of duty in Germany, he met and married the love of his life, Amelia Kaye.  Out of this union, they have two daughters and four grandchildren.

After leaving the military, Claude went to work for the Amityville School District as a junior high school math teacher and coach.  Claude was an outstanding math teacher.  Many of his students made perfect scores on the Regents exam.  Claude coached the Junior Varsity Football Team for a few years, then began coaching the Varsity Girls Basketball Team in 1979 and continued coaching until 2001.  Blessed with good health, Claude never missed a game or scrimmage during his coaching tenure, which consisted of more than 525 contests.  During his coaching years, the Amityville Varsity Girls Basketball Team won 4 league championships, 11 classification championships, 4 regional championships, and played in the final four for the state title twice.  Coach Byer guided Amityville to 360 wins with over a 70% win record.

In 2004, Claude was inducted into the NYS Coaches Hall of Fame.  A champion of girls' sports long before Title IX, Claude initiated summer leagues, award programs, clinics, and camps for girls.  He has been named Coach of the Year many times by both the basketball league and media.  He has also received numerous awards from local and civic organizations.  Claude takes special pride in knowing that the majority of his players have attended college, and most of them have obtained their degrees.  Some of his former players have even become basketball coaches themselves.  Over the years, he has gained the love and respect of players, coaches, officials, and administrators of Section XI.
