Most Americans agree with President Obama: "The reforms I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally", but I find difficult to accept Rep. Joe Wilson position that health care reform must not allow illegal immigrants who are uninsured to purchase unsubsidized health care insurance through the exchanges that the proposed health care reform would create.
On the contrary, it seems only logical that illegal immigrants should be constrained to buy health care insurance or expect to be deported if their medical care bills are not properly covered at the time of their release from an emergency room.
It is absurd to burden Americans with the health care coverage of illegal immigrants, when we should be looking on resolving this problem and prevent the bill to be passed to the federal and local budgets and ultimately to every worker in the form of tax or even more expensive health insurance plan.
Barring illegal immigrants from participating in the exchanges means that those of us who aren't illegal immigrants will end up paying for the health insurance of those who are illegal immigrants.
About 138 millions of taxpayers will have to absorb the health care cost of illegal immigrants, which according to factcheck.org* is estimated to be 5.6 millions illegal immigrants uninsured and each uninsured receives medical care worth about $1,686.00 to $ 2,983.00, increasing each taxpayer contributions about $68 to $121 per year. This number may increase dramatically this year due to the number of jobs lost and the increase of illegal immigrants that have lost their employer sponsored health care plans. In any case, factcheck admits that there is not hard data on the number of illegal immigrants uninsured and the burden for the taxpayer maybe considerably higher, since other sources calculate the number of illegal immigrants without health care insurance around 9.7 millions.
Not allowing illegal immigrants an opportunity to pay for their own unsubsidized health care insurance plan denies relieve to the taxpayers of this cost. This is a direct hit to the American worker disguised as xenophobic politics.
