In 1997, American University award Aung San Suu Kyi an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, but she only received the award in 2012 since she was under house arrest at the time when it was originally conferred. President Kerwin, at the ceremony for Suu Kyi, stated that she has "served all of humanity... by speaking out against oppression and injustice." The world has since come to know that this is indeed not true. In light of the crisis in Myanmar and Bangladesh of a mass oppression, murder, and displacement of hundreds of thousand of Muslim-minority Rohingya people, now-State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi has failed to adequately protect the Rohingya people, has reinforced the state's oppression and rights-stripping of the people, and has denied the existence and/or severity of the ethnic cleansing and refugee crisis. Aung San Suu Kyi, therefore, has shown herself not to be worthy of the degree of Doctor of Laws from American University, and the honor should subsequently be removed from her.
