The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) back in 1985 passed a federal law which prohibited the donation of blood from men who have had sexual contact with another male since 1977. This discriminatory law has prohibited the donation of approximately 219,000 pints anually from gay male donors according to a study conducted by the Williams Institute for Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy. A heterosexual male who has had sexual contact with an HIV-positive female may donate blood after a calendar year. I am asking the American Red Cross to support the repeal of such law as it is unmoral and blunt discrimination. The days of discriminatory laws against LGBT people are over.
