Currently people struggling with eating disorders are not receiving the adequate and vital care they require. This is largely because the diagnostic criteria for eating disorders is archaic and needs to be updated. Currently access to care, for anorexia is dependent on BMI.

BMI is an outdated scale that was never intended for individual health assessment. Yet, a person’s access to life saving treatment can be prohibited by this.

The intention of this petition is for the American Psychiatric Association to remove BMI from their diagnostic criteria for anorexia.
Less than 6% of individuals suffering from an eating disorder are underweight, meaning 94% of patients who desperately need life saving treatment are discriminated against. Eating disorder’s have the highest mortality rate of mental health conditions, second only to opiate addiction.

Things need to change. The criteria to accessing help needs to be updated.

Please share this petition to show the American Pyschiatric Association and bodies’ that the diagnostic criteria must change. BMI needs be removed from the DSM V for eating disorders and care needs to be made accessible.
