The question is should we in the United States make the maternal/paternal longer after birth or adoption of a child?

I want to answer this question with a yes, we should make the maternal/paternal leave longer in the United States. In Europe, families have the chance of taking 40 weeks maternal and paternal leave, and research has shown the good outcome of parents spending so much time with their children.

In the United States families are offered 1 week of maternity and paternity without getting paid. Most Americans sadly do not take the full 12 week time, because they return back to work, usually because of financial situation.

It is time that we Americans start to see and understand the importance of parental leave. When a child is growing they have a small amount of time to learn to speak, grow, walk and learn to accept physical contact. Parents that are seen to go back to work before their 12 weeks period are seen to have more doctor visit and an increase in sickness.

We can solve this problem by job paying maternal/paternal and if parents decide they need more days away than parents should be paid minimum wage for the extra days.

Most small companies can not afford to give or pay longer maternal/paternal leave but if they at least pay the minimum wage than they will not be losing total profits.

Its time we do something about the short amount of maternal/paternal leave and you can help today by signing the petition and help it come law.
