Juan Rodríguez started this petition to American Mountain Guides Association

AMGA is the foremost mountaineering & rock climbing guide certification organization in the USA. It self-describes as "committed to building and supporting a diverse community of guides and instructors" and in summer 2020, it launched its BIPOC Scholarship Fund to increase that diversity (1, 2). BIPOC instructors are invited to apply for a $3000 "scholarship" which will partially cover the costs of becoming an AMGA guide but is advertised as being Full Tuition

The scholarship requirements present several barriers to BIPOC:
-$3000 is required upfront to participate.
-BIPOC must already have WFR certification ($700-1000 per course)
-The BIPOC will receive the $3000 back IF they complete the AMGA course. The recipient must pay for & complete subsequent courses, and pass the exam, totaling an additional $6000 in AMGA coursework.
-AMGA recognizes this process takes 5-6 years on average to complete
-BIPOC only receive the money back IF they agree to supply AMGA with promotional social media content
(2, 3)

The AMGA BIPOC Scholarship Fund essentially creates a contest among BIPOC for 33% off the course material. It does not ease the entry of BIPOC into the AMGA certification process, nor does it shorten the average 5-6 year span required to get a more diverse guiding community.
