#AreYouListening aims to address a fundamental problem women face when seeking healthcare. After sharing health-related stories in a graduate school class, six women--different ages, races, and classes--found they had one thing in common: each had a story to share about being disregarded by someone in the medical community. Some women suffered from unrelenting pelvic pain for years, only to be told that "it's normal to have cramps like that". Others reported headaches that were written off by healthcare providers of all types. Besides losing time with family, taking days off from work, and silently suffering, the women also found they had in common a sense of being ignored and diminished, all because of their sex.
These six women decided to start #AreYouListening as a direct charge to clinical healthcare providers. #AreYouListening wants to change the way that doctors, PAs, and nurses care for female patients reporting pain, regardless of the cause. Women and girls must be believed, and their pain adequately treated, to be the best they can be.
