Please screen sick children for Type 1 Diabetes!
This petition had 3,200 supporters
The onset of Type 1 Diabetes (also called Juvenile Diabetes and Insulin-Dependent Diabetes) in children can come on rather quickly and can mimic several common illnesses; however, the treatment is drastically different and even a single day's delay in diagnosis can lead to DKA, coma, seizures, even death of the child. In order to protect more children's lives from delayed diagnosis, we would respectfully suggest that all sick children who are presented to primary, urgent or emergent care centers should be screened for elevated urine glucose by a simple, non-invasive urine dip stick test that costs approximately twenty cents. Alternatively, a finger stick blood glucose test could be administered for a cost of less than one dollar.
