The ambush and murder of firefighters in Webster, New York less than a week after the 20 small children and 6 teachers were massacred in Sandy Hook Connecticut, which occurred two days after a shooting spree in a mall in Portland, Oregon, which occurred less than 5 months after a massacre in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, reminds us that the presence of firearms, especially semi-automatic weapons and handguns, greatly increase the probability of violence and mayhem in the home, and that risk also extends to neighboring households. The recent incident in Webster left two firefighters and one civilian dead, two firefighters gravely wounded, and 7 houses burned to the ground.
Insurance rates for gun owners should reflect the grave risk that their weapons pose to the gunowners, their families, and their neighborhood. If the insurance rates accurately reflected that risk, perhaps some homeowners would decide that they cannot afford to keep guns in their homes.
